Are there day tours from Christchurch to Akaroa?

Yes, many visitors travel to Akaroa from Christchurch via tour or on a shuttle bus. The most convenient option for a shuttle bus service is The French Connection bus, which offers comfortable return trips daily, making it easy to enjoy an Akaroa Nature Cruise as a day trip. What is the best time to visit Akaroa for dolphins?

Hector's dolphins are present in Akaroa Harbour year-round. While the warmer months from October to April are our most popular times, don't overlook the unique charm of a winter nature cruise (May to September). During winter, the air is often crisp and clear, the scenery is dramatically beautiful with fewer crowds, and the wildlife remains active. It's a truly peaceful and captivating experience. Our cruises operate daily (except Christmas Day), weather permitting.

How long is an Akaroa nature cruise?

Our Akaroa Nature Cruise is a 2-hour tour. This duration allows ample time to explore the stunning volcanic harbour, discover sea caves, and encounter the incredible wildlife without feeling rushed.

Will I get a guided commentary on my cruise?

Our Akaroa Nature Cruises are led by an experienced skipper and a passionate crew who love sharing their knowledge. Throughout your journey, our Black Cat Cruises team provides engaging live commentary, bringing Akaroa’s rich history, unique geology, and incredible wildlife conservation efforts to life. You’ll hear fascinating insights about Hector’s dolphins, local seabirds, fur seals, and the harbour’s volcanic origins, making your cruise both memorable and informative.

What to bring on an Akaroa Nature Cruise dolphin tour?

We recommend bringing layers of clothing, as the weather can change quickly on the water. A waterproof or windproof jacket is highly recommended. Don't forget your camera for amazing photo opportunities, sunglasses, sunblock (especially in summer), and any personal medication you may need. Free tea, coffee, hot chocolate and water provided. Beverages including beer and wine and also snacks are available for purchase on board.

Do you guarantee dolphin sightings on the Akaroa Nature Cruise?

While we cannot guarantee wildlife sightings as they are wild animals in their natural habitat, our experienced skippers know the best spots to find Hector's dolphins. We are proud to have an extremely high success rate for dolphin sightings of 98%. In the rare event that no dolphins are sighted on your tour, we offer a complimentary re-cruise voucher to come cruise with us again as part of our Dolphin Promise (conditions apply).

What time do your cruises depart?

Year round (apart from Christmas Day) our Akaroa Nature Cruises departs from the Main Wharf in Akaroa at 10:45am and 1:30pm. Over the busy summer months, we also add another 3:45pm cruise typically between Dec and Feb. Please check our full schedule for the most up-to-date timetable and sailing times.

What kind of boat is used for the Akaroa Nature Cruise?

We operate a 60-foot/20-metre modern catamaran. As the largest vessel in Akaroa Harbour, it offers unobstructed views from its two spacious decks. Our vessel offers both indoor and outdoor seating, large viewing windows, and on-board amenities including snacks and drinks available to purchase and onboard toilets, to ensure a pleasant and safe journey for all passengers, regardless of the weather conditions.

Are Akaroa cruises family friendly?

Absolutely! Our Akaroa Nature Cruise is a fantastic experience for all ages from babies to seniors and is very family-friendly. Children particularly love seeing the dolphins and seals. Our crew is experienced in engaging younger passengers and ensuring a safe and enjoyable time for the whole family. There are also fun kids activities available onboard such as colouring in.

Do I need to book in advance or can I book on the day?

Our Akaroa Nature Cruise is a very popular tour, so we always recommend booking in advance to secure your preferred spot. You can either book online or call our friendly team to book your spot +64 3 304 7641. We also take walk-up bookings on the day subject to availability.

Are there toilets onboard?

Yes, we have flushing toilets available on board for customers to use during the cruise.

Are there baby change facilities on board?

No, unfortunately we do not have baby change tables on board.

Is the Akaroa Nature Cruise wheelchair and disability accessible?

Yes, we are accessible. Wheelchairs can board the Black Cat boat with ease and our staff are happy to assist you with boarding. Ramps allow for easy access to both the boat and main wharf check-in building.

Toilets are available on the Black Cat boat however there are a few steps to walk down to access these. Wheelchair accessible toilets are available in our building on the Main Wharf Akaroa. For hearing impaired clients we have information sheets available. These are available in seven languages.

Can I bring a pram on board?

Yes you can but space on board is limited, so we highly recommend bringing a front pack for your cruise instead of a pram. If you do have a pram, we can also store it safely for you at our check‑in area on the Main Wharf in Akaroa before you board.

What happens if the weather is bad?

If the weather makes it unsafe to cruise, our friendly team will contact you by phone as soon as a cancellation is confirmed. If your cruise is cancelled due to weather, you’re welcome to rebook for another day or receive a full refund.

Will I get seasick?

If you’re prone to seasickness or motion sickness, we recommend taking preventative steps before your cruise. Visit a chemist beforehand and take an anti‑nausea remedy in good time, as different options take varying amounts of time to work. Once onboard, feel free to ask our crew about the best spots on the boat to minimise motion, and don’t hesitate to let them know if you start to feel unwell, our amazing crew has plenty of helpful tips and tricks to help you feel more comfortable.

Are the cruises eco-friendly or certified by any organisations?

Yes, Black Cat Cruises was actually the first eco-tourism operator in New Zealand! We are Qualmark Gold for Sustainability, Department of Conservation Approved, SMART operator and MOSS Approved for Marine Safety. We proudly uphold the Tiaki Promise, a commitment to act as guardians of this special place for both present and future generations. Do you provide life-jackets on board?

In line with New Zealand Maritime law and due to the size of our vessel, wearing life jackets is not mandatory. However, life jackets are available for everyone on board in case of an emergency. If you feel more comfortable for your children to wear one while on the cruise for extra peace of mind, our crew can provide you one.

Where can I park my car when I’m in Akaroa?

Our Akaroa Nature Cruise departs from the Main Wharf in Akaroa (the big blue building on the wharf). Akaroa offers several convenient and nearby parking options within easy walking distance of the Black Cat Cruises departure point at Main Wharf:

  • Gaiety Hall – Free parking (including for campervans) for up to 8 hours. It’s just 5 minute walk (about 400 m) from Main Wharf.

  • Akaroa Recreation Ground (Jubilee Park) – Available along Rue Brittan and includes an electric vehicle charging station. It's approximately a 15 minute walk.

  • Waterfront street parking – Also an option, though time‑restricted and campervans are not permitted. It’s a 2 - 4 minute walk depending on availability.

For ease and peace of mind, we recommend using the free parking at Gaiety Hall or Jubilee Park. You'll avoid time limits and be just a short stroll away from boarding your cruise.

Can you swim with dolphins in Akaroa?

What wildlife will I see on an Akaroa cruise?

During your Akaroa Nature Cruise, you can expect to see an incredible array of marine wildlife. The main wildlife you will see are the Hector's dolphins, only found in New Zealand. You'll also likely spot New Zealand Fur Seals basking on the rocks, and you also might see White-Flippered Little Blue Penguins, as well as various sea birds such as Shags, Mollymawk/Albatross and Gannets . Sometimes we are also lucky enough to see whales out in the harbour.

Cathedral Cave is one of the most iconic natural landmarks within Akaroa Harbour. Formed by ancient volcanic activity, it is a magnificent sea cave with a towering archway. Our nature cruises often take you close enough to appreciate its grandeur, and sometimes even venture inside, depending on sea conditions, offering a breathtaking experience.

Are there things to do in Akaroa before or after the cruise?

Absolutely! Akaroa is full of things to enjoy before or after your Black Cat cruise. You can join other tours such as a visit to the Pōhatu Penguins colony or an evening with Akaroa Stargazing. Stroll through the village and browse boutique shops and galleries, or take a walk on one of the local tracks like the Garden of Tane for beautiful harbour views. When it’s time to eat, there’s no shortage of great cafés and restaurants offering everything from fresh pastries to waterfront dining. There’s plenty to explore to make a full day out in Akaroa!

Understanding Akaroa's Nature & Wildlife

What are Hector's dolphins?

Hector’s dolphins (Cephalorhynchus hectori hectori) are the smallest and rarest marine dolphins in the world, found only in the coastal waters of New Zealand. Easily recognised by their distinctive rounded black dorsal fin, which resembles Mickey Mouse’s ear, they are a treasured and iconic species and often referred to as “the kiwi of the sea”. Akaroa Harbour is one of their most important habitats, and around 1,000 Hector’s dolphins live around Banks Peninsula. Overall, their total population is estimated at only 10,000 to 15,000 individuals, making them a nationally endangered species.

Where to see Hector's dolphins in NZ?

Akaroa Harbour on the Banks Peninsula is one of the best and most reliable places in New Zealand to see Hector's dolphins in their natural habitat. Other areas include parts of the West Coast of the South Island and around the North Island, but Akaroa is particularly famous for them. Are Hector's dolphins endangered?

Yes, unfortunately, Hector's dolphins are classified as endangered. Their population has significantly declined but with conservation efforts this is improving. Taking a responsible nature cruise with us helps support the local economy and contribute to their protection. Part of your ticket price goes towards dolphin research and education.

What are Akaroa marine mammal sanctuary rules?

Akaroa Harbour is part of a Marine Mammal Sanctuary, established to protect Hector's dolphins and other marine life. Strict regulations are in place to ensure minimal disturbance to the animals. These rules include speed restrictions for vessels, minimum approach distances for humans, and prohibitions on feeding or intentionally touching marine mammals. Our cruises strictly adhere to all Department of Conservation (DOC) guidelines and regulations to ensure the safety and well-being of the dolphins and other wildlife.

Can you do whale watching in Akaroa or Christchurch?

We occasionally have rare sightings of larger marine mammals like whales in Akaroa Harbour and Orcas but if you are wanting a specific whale tour we recommend Whale Watch Kaikoura.
